Thirty-sixth Conference on New York State History

Thirty-sixth Conference on New York State History

I was thrilled to participate in the “Thirty-sixth Conference on New York State Historythis past June 18th. Held at Niagara University in Lewiston, New York from June 18th through the 20th, the Program Committee selected my proposal on “The Bridge and Staten Island: Unplanned Chaos and Disorderfor presentation in the session: “Impact of Government Planning on Local Communities.” I presented along with Professor Kenneth Mernitz of SUNY Buffalo State whose paper “Another Approach to Building a Dam: Robert Moses at Niagara, 1956 – 1962was a fascinating look at the Master Builder and his impact on community. It was a fabulous conference and I thank New York State Historian Robert Weible, the Program Committee, and all who work so hard to organize this annual event for allowing me to participate.

The photo/postcard of Mulberry Street is awesome! If I had known you were archiving photos beyond the “forgotten boro”, I’d have sent you my manhattan postcards to post! My mother was born on 10/18/1920 in a tenement on Hester Street, so I’m a bit nostalgic about that area too! If you haven’t been to it already, I’d recommend a visit to the ” Tenement Museum” in NYC. It’s a wonderful look back into the hard life and times of our forbears who crossed the Atlantic in search of a better life for their descendent over 100 years ago. It showcases the many hardships they suffered with amazing courage and the will to survive.
